Fuse Box Replacement in Risca

I'm Phil Roberts, a NAPIT-registered electrician based nearby in Caerphilly, and fuse box replacement is a job I do regularly across Risca. The Ty-Sign estate is a good example, it was built in the early 1960s and a lot of those original boards are now well overdue for replacement. Down nearer the town centre I see plenty of older terraces still running on rewireable fuses too, and even on the newer Barratt Homes developments around Risca it's worth checking the board is up to current standards, since not every consumer unit fitted a few years back meets what's expected now.

When I replace a fuse box I fit a modern metal-clad consumer unit with an RCBO protecting each individual circuit, so a fault on one circuit won't take down the whole house, and I add surge protection where it's appropriate for the property. Everything is tested before I finish, I issue you with an Electrical Installation Certificate and notify the work to Building Control as part of being NAPIT registered. I cover Ty-Sign, the older streets near the centre and the newer estates alike, and I'll always explain what your existing board is doing wrong before you commit to anything.

Ty-Sign and beyond

I know Ty-Sign's early-1960s boards well and I also cover the older town centre terraces and the newer Barratt Homes estates around Risca.

RCBO protection per circuit

Each circuit gets its own RCBO rather than one shared trip switch, so a fault in one room doesn't cut power everywhere.

Certified and notified

Every consumer unit change is tested, certificated and notified to Building Control, handled by me directly.

Your questions, answered

How much is a fuse box replacement in Risca?

It's usually in the region of £450 to £900 depending on the board and circuits. Every job and every house differs, so I'll always give you one fixed written price before any work starts.

My Ty-Sign house still has the original fuse box, is that a problem?

Boards from that era are generally due for replacement now, rewireable fuses and old switchgear don't offer the same protection as a modern RCBO board. I can take a look and give you a straight answer.

Do newer Risca homes ever need a new consumer unit?

Sometimes, yes. Even on newer Barratt Homes properties I occasionally find boards that don't quite meet current standards, so it's always worth a check if you're unsure.
