What Are the Signs a House Needs Rewiring?

A few clear signs tell you a home is heading towards a rewire. A fuse box with old rewireable fuses (the sort with wire you replace by hand) rather than modern breakers is the biggest one. So are rubber, fabric or lead-coated cables, sockets that are warm, loose or scorched, lights that dim when an appliance kicks in, and simply not having enough sockets, so the place runs on trailing extension leads. None of these mean panic, but together they say the wiring is past its best and working harder than it should. The only way to know for certain is an inspection, and an EICR grades exactly what's safe, what needs attention and what can wait.

A lot of the housing across Caerphilly and the valleys is older terraces and post-war homes, and plenty are still on wiring from decades ago, so this comes up often on my patch, from the streets near the castle to the valley terraces around Blackwood and Pontypridd. A rewire is the biggest electrical job a house ever has, so I never recommend one you don't need. If your wiring has years left, I'll say so; if it's genuinely due, I plan it room by room, protect your floors and furniture, make good afterwards and certify every circuit before handover, notifying Building Control for you through my NAPIT registration.

Know the tell-tale signs

Rewireable fuses, rubber or fabric-coated cables, warm or scorched sockets and too few of them all point towards a rewire.

Never oversold

If your wiring has plenty of life left I'll tell you honestly, rather than talking you into the biggest job in the house.

Planned, tidy and certified

When a rewire is genuinely due I work room by room, make good afterwards and certify every circuit, notified through NAPIT.

Your questions, answered

How do I know for sure if my home needs rewiring?

An EICR is the honest answer. I inspect and test the full installation, grade what I find and tell you plainly whether a rewire is due or whether it's got years left. I never recommend a rewire you don't need.

Is old wiring always dangerous?

Not automatically, but the older signs (rewireable fuses, rubber or fabric cabling, no RCD protection) mean it lacks the safety features of a modern installation. It's worth having tested so you know exactly where you stand.

Can you rewire an older Caerphilly terrace without wrecking it?

Yes. Older homes are some of my favourite work. I plan the cable routes carefully to keep chasing and disruption sensible, protect everything as I go and make good afterwards, room by room.
